Latin

The ancient language of Latin is taught in years 3 to 6. Latin lessons follow the 'Miniumus’ scheme of work. Pupils will:

• Develop an appreciation of the Latin language and culture (linking it to pupils’ learning on the Ancient Roman Civilisation in history);
• Read carefully to build knowledge of Latin phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary;
• Read and write Latin words, phrases and sentences to communicate meaning;
• Develop an understanding of the etymology of words we use in modern English (since around 60% of English words come directly from Latin roots);
• Understand and communicate in writing, focusing on describing people, places, things and actions (Children will take part in short oral exchanges in Latin, however, to meet the KS2 National Curriculum objectives for ancient languages only reading and writing are required).
